When a group claims to be “chosen by God,” the danger multiplies, not only for the “unchosen” other who may be subjected to violence, but for the chosen group itself that is at risk of being undermined. THERE IS SOMETHING IN US THAT PERIODICALLY EMERGES AND GIVES US A GLIMPSE INTO THE PROFOUND AND DISTURBING EXPERIENCES WHICH SHAPED OUR WORLD AND REALITY. CALL IT THE COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS OR WHATEVER FITS TO DESCRIBE OUR DARK AND REPRESSED SELF. IT IS A TISSUE OF GUILT AND FEAR WHICH IS INSCRIBED LIKE SCARS WITHIN OUR ADVANCED WORLD. LA MALEDICTION - Un des grands paradoxes de notre époque est le fait que des forces irrépressibles du passé hantent le présent. Les scandales de torture à Abu Ghraib et Guantanamo ne sont que la pointe de l'iceberg de ce retour du refoulé. Le passé hante notre présent comme un spectre, et cette hantise a une dimension éminamment politique comme elle incarne des siècles de dominance culturelle de l'Ouest et d'oppression de 'l'Autre'. Il y a quelque chose en nous qui émerge sporadiquement et nous fait entrevoir les expériences profondes et dérangeantes, qui ont faconné notre monde et notre réalité. On pourrait l'appeler l'inconscient collectif ou tout ce qui vous semble juste pour décrire notre sombre identité reprimée. C'est un tissu de culpabilité et de peurs qui cicatrise notre monde avancé. Notre esprit produit et reproduit chaque jour son lent poison. Depuis longtemps, nous ne pouvons plus nous en passer. Nous avons sacrément besoin de ce pain quotidien. THE TRUSTFILES Here’s how guest curator Tim Peterson refers to The Trustfiles: Nadine Hilbert and Gast Bouschet’s project The Trustfiles demonstrates a political engagement with multimedia. Featuring text, photography, video, and a participatory interface that varies throughout, The Trustfiles takes a paradoxically mystical view of political action by transubstantiation of documents from interventions and from the web itself into a beatific homage to networked consciousness. Most importantly, Hilbert and Bouschet’s project demonstrates a constant performative oscillation between text and code structure in which fragments of news are reported and then obscured or garbled by intervening code. The result is a kind of beautiful chaos. 'Urban Connexions evokes the city and more generally urban circulation, displaying fictions of landscape and accosting the notion of ‘marks’. It proposes reflections on contemporary beauty and the making of history'. (Judith Quentel) In May, their work will also be part of a show at the Witte Zaal in Gent entitled Elusive Cities. 'Le développement actuel des villes est tel, aujourd’hui, qu’elles échappent à nos catégories classificatrices, analytiques, perceptives voire émotives. Leurs développements semblent requérir l’invention permanente de nouveaux outils conceptuels, en perpétuelle redéfinition, susceptibles d’offrir la possibilité d’une appréhension. Dès lors s’impose presque d’elle-même une hypothèse pragmatique : des œuvres d’art permettent de cristalliser des états parcellaires ou des problématiques globales, qui valent à la fois pour toutes les villes ou pour une ville en particulier. Ces propositions fragmentaires sont à la fois une exacerbation d’un détail singulier d’une ville et une synthèse globalisatrice de toutes les villes. L’exposition, à la manière des histoires que narre le Marco Polo d’Italo Calvino au Kublaï Khan, juxtapose des récits de villes, amoncelle des bribes de cités, rassemble des extraits subjectifs de métropoles insaisissables. Elle recompose une ville imaginaire, qui n’est aucune ville en particulier et est à la fois toutes les villes'.
